Will This Get Between You and Your Customer? Here's the Straight Answer
Ask any hauler what actually worries them about invoice funding, and it's usually not the fee. It's this: will some finance company start calling my GC, chasing them for money, and making me look bad?
That's a fair question. Some factors do work that way. Here's how we think about it, and what actually changes when you fund an invoice.
What doesn't change
Your customer's payment terms stay exactly the same. Whatever they normally pay on, 30 days, 60 days, that doesn't change. You're not asking your GC to pay faster or do business any differently. The only thing that changes is you're not the one waiting on the money anymore.
What we actually do
We underwrite the project and the general contractor, not your personal credit. Part of that process is understanding the GC: have they always done what they said they were going to do? Do they pay on time? That's due diligence on our end, done quietly, before we ever fund your invoice. It's not a collections call to your customer.
We're not a bank, and we're not a collections agency. We think of ourselves as advisors: a real phone call, a real relationship, real expertise in your industry. Aggressive collections practices on your customer are the thing we're built to avoid, not a service we offer.

The question worth asking any funding partner
If you're evaluating invoice funding anywhere, not just with us, ask directly: "Will you contact my customer? How? How often?" A straight answer to that question tells you everything about whether they respect the relationship you've built.
Does Bolton have to buy all of my invoices?
Generally, yes. Once you're set up with Bolton, your invoices route through us rather than you picking and choosing which ones to hand over. We're not built to take on just your one slow-paying GC while you keep the easy-paying customers to yourself. Some agreements carry exceptions, and the specifics live in your term sheet, so walk through exactly what's covered with your advisor before you sign anything.
Will my customer know I'm using Bolton?
This is worth a direct conversation with your Bolton advisor before you sign anything, since it depends on how the specific invoice and project are structured. What we can tell you is the goal on our end: your GC relationship is yours. We're not trying to insert ourselves into it or become the face your customer associates with getting paid. We're the reason you get paid faster. That's the whole job.
Why this matters more in construction-adjacent hauling than anywhere else
In over-the-road freight, you might work with a broker or shipper once and never see them again. In dump truck hauling, you're often working the same GCs, the same job sites, the same relationships, project after project, year after year. Burning that relationship over a funding arrangement would cost you a lot more than the invoice was worth. That's exactly why we built Bolton around not doing that.
The bottom line
You built those GC relationships. Keep them. Invoice funding should be invisible to your customer relationship, not a wedge inside it. If a funding partner can't tell you clearly how they handle your customer, that's the question to push on before you sign anything.
